SINGAPORE - THE Housing & Development Board (HDB) has been awarded the Gold Award for the 2012 International Award for Liveable Communities under the Project Built section for the My Waterway@Punggol project.

The award is conferred by the LivCom Management Company and is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

It recognizes International Best Practices in the management of the local environment. The Livcom Awards are given out annually since 1997 and over 50 countries have been represented at the Awards.

My Waterway@Punggol was chosen as the winner by an independent panel of environmental and landscape management experts, where entries were judged based on the following criteria: enhancement of the natural and built landscape, arts, culture and heritage, environmental best practices, community participation and empowerment, healthy lifestyle and strategic planning.

The winners were announced at the award ceremony held in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates on Nov 26.

HDB’s Deputy CEO (Building) Mr Sng Cheng Keh said, “HDB and its partner agencies designed My Waterway@Punggol to let all residents enjoy „Green Living by the Waters?.

Rather than leave this as a functional pipeline linking two reservoirs, our team of planners, engineers and architects have worked hard to create this unique waterfront experience, while also preserving the nature and heritage of the area.”

The waterway was conceptualised based on three key design elements – Green, Water and People, capitalising on environmentally sustainable features, integrating stormwater management and creating community spaces.

Besides winning the LivCom Awards 2012, the project’s most recent accolades include the FIABCI Singapore Property Award in Oct 2012 and the Global Superior Achievement Award by the International Water Association in Aug 2012.

Punggol Waterway wins top global award

Punggol Waterway has been awarded the prestigious Global Superior Achievement Award by the International Water Association (IWA), marking the first time an Asian nation has received the accolade since it began in 2006.

Aside from receiving the top award, the project by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) was also named Global Grand Winner in the planning category.

“This is not just a big win for HDB. It is also a proud moment for Singapore, to be the first and only Asian country to have won the IWA’s highest award,” said Sng Cheng Keh, Deputy CEO of the housing board.

He added that the award affirms HDB’s commitment to promote “good, sustainable development practices”.

The nominees for the Global Superior Achievement Award were judged on the following criteria: excellence in water engineering; originality and innovative use of technology; the future value it brings to the engineering profession; the social, economic and sustainable design considerations; and the complexity of the situation.

Punggol Waterway stood out for its innovation, green practices and novel technologies as well as its contribution to the water engineering industry.

Founded in 2006, the biennial IWA Project Innovation Award (PIA) recognises excellence and innovation in water engineering projects globally.

Awards will be given out to this year’s 13 winners across six categories on 19 September in conjunction with the 8th IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition in Busan, Korea.
